I mentioned yesterday Catalonia is checking out giving citizens more control over their identifying information. So what, you might ask? Well, here's a story about how Argentina is partnering with several private-sector providers to build a blockchain platform for citizen ID info that is intended to enable them to get jobs and housing - things they can't do if employers and landlords don't believe the citizens are who they say they are.
Alleviating poverty and integrating more people into our society and economy - that's a pretty impressive business use.
This new platform will also help to alleviate the “poverty penalty” that many of the poorest in Argentina endure. This penalty refers to the fact that the vast majority of people below the poverty line do not have the proper paperwork and identification necessary to acquire assistance or gain employment or housing. Because of this, they are shut out from the very assistance that was designed to help them get out of their current state.
