The Home Office in the UK has announced it is releasing a tool jointly developed with Microsoft to help social media platforms more readily identify predators who are grooming children online for potential abuse. The tool is based on AI technology and will be available free of charge to small- and medium-sized businesses. The idea was generated from a hackathon and built out from there.
There's SO much that's exciting about this story. The fact that a great idea came from a hackathon, the public-private partnership that evolved, the offer to make this valuable tool available free, and of course the fact we can better tackle this awful crime. While I tend to focus on the tech, what really matters is all these other features - the tech is the necessary tool, but it's when all these other things come together we can really transform our society and our citizens' lives. What are your ideas you'd like to see tackled?
We are committed to stamping out this vile crime and this technique is just one part of that. Through collaboration with international partners and industry we are leading a worldwide effort to keep children safe from abuse.
