Numerous local governments are helping set up public-private partnerships to support local small businesses to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of them are targetting businesses like restaurants and retail that have been hit particularly hard.
The San Diego Culture Challenge Fund is different in that it's provding $1.25 million in assistance, funded by a collection of public and private-sector organizations, to support local artists. The arts community is a critical part of the image and social fabric of San Diego.
I find it fascinating and heartening that this partnership recognizes not just the services and retail sectors of their community (which are clearly important), but also what gives the community it's heart and soul.
"Make no mistake, arts, culture are incredibly important under the fabric of really who we are in this great city of ours."
