One of the emerging use cases for public-private partnerships we are seeing arise from the COVID pandemic is making broadband access more easily and universally available. If we are all required to work, shop, and play remotely as much as possible, then our access to affordable broadband is clearly ideal for everyone.
Google and Facebook, as well as other private-sector players, are stepping up and participating in numerous partnerships, some of which are described in this article. “Cities are good at building infrastructure, permitting, and navigating rights-of-way,” said David Finn, director of corporate development at Google Fiber. “The private sector is good at logistics, like marketing,” he continued, saying that public-private partnerships “bring the best of both together.”
