Did you know that it is Fraud Awareness Week this week?
For me fraud and data are two phrases that regularly come together in my world.
When people think of data – they instantly think of documents and emails, the things they create, receive, edit and delete (amongst other things). However, during a fraud investigation, you need to look at far more than merely documents and emails – rather you also need to undertake a full forensic examination to obtain the necessary findings. When undertaking a forensic examination of a computer system we look for artefacts that can provide intelligence and evidence for a case. This may include recovering deleted files, examining Internet activity, analysing metadata to understand what happened when, scrutinising backups and other system files to profile user activity on a system – where they went, what applications they ran, what devices they connected and much more.
